Setup Genius vs Data Loggers

Setup Genius vs Data Loggers (MoTeC, AiM, RaceBox)

Data acquisition systems from MoTeC, AiM, RaceBox and others record what the car did on track: speed, g, RPM, damper position, tyre temperature. Setup Genius records what the car was when it did it: springs, bars, geometry, tyres, pressures, wing angles. Neither replaces the other. The value comes from putting a lap time or a trace next to the setup that produced it, which is what Setup Genius is built to do.

Why loggers do not solve setup tracking

Logger software has a setup notes field, and almost nobody keeps it up to date because the software lives on the engineering laptop and the setup changes happen at the car. The result is a season of excellent data with no reliable record of what the car was when it was recorded. Setup Genius puts the setup entry on the phone at the car, so the record is made where the change happens.

Using them together

Record the setup in Setup Genius before the session, enter the best lap and sector times afterwards, and attach the exported log file. When you look back at a track, you see the setup, the lap time and the data in one place. The shock velocity analyser takes damper position exports and builds the histogram against the setup that produced it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Setup Genius connect directly to my logger?

Not by live telemetry. Lap data can be imported from exported files and logger exports can be attached to a setup.

Do I need a logger to use Setup Genius?

No. Many users record lap times from timing screens and tyre temperatures from a pyrometer. A logger adds depth when you are ready.

Which logger should I buy first?

A GPS lap timer with predictive timing gives the most value per dollar for club racing. Add damper potentiometers when you start tuning dampers seriously.
