Setup Genius vs Spreadsheets
Setup Genius vs Spreadsheets for Race Car Setup Tracking
Most racers start tracking setups in a spreadsheet because it is free and already on the laptop. The problem shows up two seasons later: dozens of tabs, no way to find the setup that worked at the same track in the wet, and nobody else on the crew can read it. Setup Genius is a purpose-built setup management platform with a free plan, structured per-corner data, a tyre bank and an AI assistant that reads your history.
| Capability | Spreadsheet | Setup Genius |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to start | Free | Free plan; paid from $9/month |
| Find last year's setup at this track | Scroll tabs and hope | Filter by track, driver, vehicle or session |
| Per-tyre tracking (compound, laps, position) | Manual, usually skipped | Tyre bank assigns tyres to wheel positions per setup |
| Crew access on phones in the pits | Shared file, conflicting edits | Multi-user team roles with live updates |
| Setup comparison across sessions | Side-by-side columns if you built them | Built-in comparison and change summaries |
| AI recommendations from your own data | None | Apex AI assistant with your setup history |
| Calculators (spring rate, roll centre, gearing) | Build your own formulas | Included |
| Attachments (photos, data files) | Separate folders | Attached to the setup |
Where spreadsheets win
If you run one car, work alone and only need a handful of fields, a spreadsheet is fine and nobody will talk you out of it. It is also the right tool for one-off engineering calculations and for processing exported logger data.
Where spreadsheets break
Spreadsheets have no notion of a session, a tyre or a vehicle, so every relationship has to be typed in again. They do not stop two people editing the same cell in the pits. They cannot tell you that the last three times you softened the rear bar at this circuit the car got loose on exit. And they are only as good as the discipline of the person who built them.
Setup Genius exists because those gaps cost real track time. Each setup records the full chassis, geometry, tyre and aero state, links to the event and session, and keeps the change history so you can see exactly what moved between runs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import my existing spreadsheet?
Setup templates let you define the fields you already track, so recreating your spreadsheet columns as a template takes a few minutes. Historical rows can be entered as past setups against the relevant event.
Will I lose flexibility?
Templates are customisable per vehicle type, so you track the fields that matter for your discipline and hide the rest. You also keep free-text notes and attachments on every setup.
What if I stop paying?
You keep access to your saved setups on the Free plan. Paid plans add more drivers, vehicles, AI chats and team collaboration.
