What is Tyre Stagger? Definition, How to Measure It & Oval Setup
Stagger is the difference in circumference between the right-side and left-side tyres on one axle, measured in millimetres or inches, with the right tyre normally larger. On a solid rear axle a larger right rear makes the axle act like a cone rolling in a circle, which helps the car turn left without scrubbing. Dirt speedway cars run large rear stagger, typically 25–75 mm (1–3 in); asphalt cars run less.
| Change | Corner entry | Corner exit | Straights |
|---|---|---|---|
| More rear stagger | Slightly freer | Turns more freely, less tight | Car pulls left slightly |
| Less rear stagger | Slightly tighter | Tighter (pushes) on throttle | Tracks straighter |
| More front stagger | Helps the car turn in | Little effect | Steers left |
Measuring stagger
Use a stagger tape or a flexible measuring tape around the tyre's centreline at race pressure after the tyre has been run or warmed, because circumference grows with temperature. Measure each tyre, subtract left from right on each axle and record it with the pressures used. On a locked rear axle the stagger is the only thing that lets the rear wheels cover different distances through a corner.
Tuning with stagger
If the car is tight (pushes) on exit under throttle, add rear stagger by raising the right rear pressure, lowering the left rear or fitting a larger tyre. If it is loose on exit, reduce it. On a long, fast track less stagger is needed because the corner radius is larger; tight bullrings need more. Setup Genius's tyre bank records circumference per tyre so stagger pairs can be planned before the car is on the trailer.
Frequently asked questions
Does stagger matter with an open or limited-slip differential?
Much less. The differential lets the wheels turn at different speeds. Stagger is mainly a tool for locked (spool) axles, though some teams run small stagger with limited-slips for entry feel.
How do I get more stagger without changing pressure?
Choose tyres with different measured circumferences from the same batch; tyres vary by several millimetres as manufactured. A tyre bank with recorded circumferences makes this straightforward.
Does stagger affect gearing?
Yes. The effective rolling diameter is roughly the average of the two rear tyres, so changing stagger by altering one tyre's size changes road speed per RPM slightly.
